Victory Through Perseverance

In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins; not through strength, but through perseverance.

  • H. Jackson Brown

We have a choice that has been set before us.  We can either be victims who are overwhelmed by the circumstances of our lives or we can be victors who triumphantly overcome in every context of life.  Regardless of the hand that you were forced to play I want you to emphatically proclaim “Better is Before Me” and allow that to serve as the impetus behind your perception of yourself.

Very often the difference between winning and losing is not strength to overcome adversity, but rather it is the mindset to persevere.  Perseverance necessitates a mindset that is resigned to stay the course regardless of the opposition.  It is the rugged determination that is resolved to endure even in circumstances that may be uncomfortable and painful because of the assurance of victory on the other side of the journey.  Perseverance is dogmatically declaring “Better is Before Me” in a context that appears to be the antithesis of that declaration.  It is the mindset that is resigned in its decision to hold firmly to faith when the surrounding conditions appear to suggest that it would be easier to give up!

There are some battles that are only won by way of perseverance.  The Bible declares in James 1:4 “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” The implication here is that in order to obtain the full measure of the work God is perfecting in us through the vehicle of hardship we must engage a tenacity that endures beyond the temporary pain of contradictory circumstances.

Consider the steady stream of water that comes against the seemingly unbreakable force of the granite rock.  At first glance it would appear an impossible feat for the liquid substance of water to infiltrate the impenetrable rock.  With a steady and persistent flow, however, over time the water by way of erosion will wear away miniscule rock fragments and over an extended period of time the once impenetrable rock will break down under the tenacious force of the water.

The same is true in the individual contexts of our lives.  There are some circumstances that can only be overcome through perseverance and we must engage this holy virtue by way of the Holy Spirit as never before.  This is not the time to grow weary in well doing.  This is not the time to become frustrated.  We must decide that we will keep going no matter what! We must purpose in our hearts that drawing back is not an option because victory over everything and in everything is our inheritance.

It has been said that the person who is willing to endure forever will not be waiting very long! Our circumstances can’t do anything but yield to us when we refuse to relent! Perseverance is the quality that sets winners apart from losers.

A poem by Edgar A. Guest entitled See It Through captures the heart of the matter:

When you’re up against a trouble,

Meet it squarely, face to face;

Lift your chin and set your shoulders,

Plant your feet and take a brace.

When it’s vain to try to dodge it,

Do the best that you can do;

You may fail, but you may conquer,

See it through!

Black may be the clouds about you

And your future may seem grim,

But don’t let your nerve desert you;

Keep yourself in fighting trim.

If the worst is bound to happen,

Spite of all that you can do,

Running from it will not save you,

See it through!

Even hope may seem but futile,

When with troubles you’re beset,

But remember you are facing

Just what other men have met.

You may fail, but fall still fighting;

Don’t give up, whate’er you do;

Eyes front, head high to the finish.

See it through!

Stay in the fight! Persevere and go for the goal!
